Yoyogi Mochi Pounding Song Contest 2025

date(s) (e.g. for exhibition) 01/31
~ 01/31
summary

In the Yoyogi district of Shibuya Ward, where Yoyogi Hachimangu Shrine is located, from before World War II until around 1955, it was customary for farmers to make rice cakes for the New Year by going from one house to another, with each house consisting of five or six households. In 1968, a volunteer group was formed to preserve the song sung at that time, and the "Yoyogi Mochitsuki Uta" has been handed down to the present.
On the day of the event, from around 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the rice cakes are pounded by the people of the preservation society while a rice-cake pounding song echoes in the background.

Date: Friday, January 31, 2025, 11:00-13:00

Location: In front of Yoyogi Hachimangu Shrine

Organized by: Yoyogi Local Culture Preservation Society

The rice cakes are then scattered with beans on the Setsubun Festival on February 3 as "Fukumochi" rice cakes.
