For parents of small children, the eternal question is how to keep their children physically fit in the middle of summer.
Playing outside in the Sasazuka, Hatagaya, and Hatsudai areas, surrounded by asphalt at temperatures over 35 degrees Celsius, is extremely dangerous! But we found an oasis in an unexpected place.
From the main entrance of the Shibuya Ward Sports Center, follow the fence to the left, and you will find a door secretly opened. As soon as I stepped through the door, the damp soil and dense grove of trees made my body temperature drop dramatically. Even standing in a daze, I did not perspire much! A white cloth laid out in the center of the plaza was hosed down to become a waterslide, and everyone from one-year-olds to elementary school children were sliding down it, covered in mud and slick with their clothes.
Stray bullets from the water guns occasionally hit the adults, but the wind blowing on wet clothes further cooled the sensation!
Even children who did not like playing in the water enjoyed playing with the staff's handmade ring toss and slingshot, scribbling on the walls with chalk, and messing around with big worms. Even so, it was not hot enough to cause instant heat stroke, and the children were able to enjoy playing outside to their heart's content while taking in moderate amounts of water.
It was a Sunday that made me feel a little like I was playing in the mountains behind my grandmother's house in the countryside, even though I was in the middle of the city.
