A taiyaki shop is opening in front of Sasazuka Station! and that was the rumor among my moms and dads before the opening of Shinjuku Tsubakian.
When I went to buy just before 3:00 p.m., about three people were waiting in line, and people passing by seemed to be paying attention to the store. I also checked the lineup and prices while standing in line.
There are three types of items on the menu: thick baked (azuki) 220 yen, thin baked (azuki) 200 yen, and thin baked (custard) 220 yen.
The sign also showed a picture of "fried small taiyaki," but it was not available today.
I heard that Atsuyaki is the most popular type, so I bought one Atsuyaki and one thin (custard) one. Atsuyaki is a thick dough like Imagawa-yaki with anko (sweet bean paste) sandwiched between the dough. Just by looking at it, you can feel its hoity-toity texture! The thin pancake is the old style with a little crispy helicopter.
They gave me two in a paper bag. Payment is cash or paypay only.
I wanted to eat it hot right then and there, but I had other things to do, so I went home and had it.
First is the new sensation of thick baked goods. The dough is satisfying, yet melts in the mouth and is not mushy in the mouth. The red bean paste is also moderately sweet, and the flavor of azuki can be enjoyed directly!
The dough has no extra flavoring or sweetness, so I never got tired of it.
The thin pancake has a crispy, traditional dough. You can enjoy the aroma and texture of taiyaki as if to say, "Oh, yes, taiyaki smells just like this! The whole wheat flour used in the dough also adds a savory aroma.
Furthermore, the custard inside is not the traditional yellow and hard type, but a smooth and creamy custard like a cream puff from a pastry shop. It is insanely delicious!
Taiyakis are not something you can make yourself, nor are they sold in supermarkets or convenience stores. That is why, when you find a store, you just want to buy it, isn't it? You can always buy such taiyakis in front of Sasazuka Station...it's the best!
There is a place to sit in front of the store and it is right next to the Keyaki Plaza, so next time I would like to find the right moment to enjoy freshly baked food on the spot.
Incidentally, Taiyaki Meidai Shinjuku Tsubakian also has stores in Ikebukuro and Daikanyama.
