Around the 14th century, Japanese pirates from the Korean Peninsula introduced fans, which captivated the court nobles of Kyoto. In the early Edo period (1603-1867), the "Edo-tailored Miyako Uchiwa Chidori-type (Chidori Uchiwa)" was brought from Kyoto to Edo (present-day Tokyo). The last remaining craftsmen's skills are now being passed on in the form of courses to gifted young people from the Shibuya Ward Hand in Hand Parents Association, welfare workshop Frendo, and other organizations.
Miyako Uchiwa was transmitted by Japanese pirates of the Korean Peninsula around the fourteenth century and fascinated the court aristocrats in Kyoto.
