70m long! High-speed Soumen battle @ Jugo-zaka Nagashi Soumen Contest
Event Report

The Sasazuka Jugo-zaka shopping street has a wide range of stores from old-fashioned stores to fashionable restaurants coexisting along the long, narrow slope. Like Hatagaya's Roku-go-saka, the Sasahatahatsu area's slope shopping street project is hot!

This time, we participated in a 70-meter-long Nagashi Somen (fine white noodles) contest, using the top and bottom of Jugo-zaka (the highest point of the hill)! Even just "Nagashi Somen" is exciting. And it was on a slope! And it's so long! By the time registration opened at 11:00 a.m., there was already a long line. I don't know where they got the information, but the TV Asahi J-Channel even came to cover the event.

After registration, we stood by a little above the middle. It was extremely hot, but the tent was set up so we could avoid direct sunlight. With the countdown, Nagashi Somen started! However, at first, most of the noodles were taken upstream and did not reach us. But eventually, the somen started to trickle down to us, but we were in the middle of the hill, where the slope was the steepest. They were flowing so fast! It was extremely difficult for our 4-year-old, but he managed to get some and eat a good amount. After that, the somen were also being floated down from the middle of the slope, so it seemed that the people downstream were also able to eat them. It was also fun to see things other than Soumen floating down the slope from time to time.

The stores in the Jugozaka shopping street also sell not only sake, but also their own original somen tsuyu (soy sauce for somen noodles), fried tofu and onigiri (rice balls) for when you get tired of somen noodles, etc., and this was enough to fill me up.

It seems to have been on the TV evening news, and if the event is held again next year, the number of participants is likely to increase considerably. Check the information as soon as possible to be prepared for the Somen Tournament!
